Allen Barbee

  G. Allen Barbee earned a Master of Music degree from DePaul University in Chicago under the performance studies of Robert Morgan, Gladys Elliot, and Ray Still on oboe and English horn plus conducting with Donald DeRoche and Meng Kong-Tham. While there he founded and directed the Belden Consort, a professional chamber music ensemble, and was Assistant Conductor of the Chicago Philharmonia. Allen earned his Bachelor of Music degree from Furman University in Greenville, SC while studying woodwinds and conducting under Kurt Studier, Robert Chesebro, Dan Ellis, and Jay Bocook. During this time he was Director of Woodwinds for the Furman Music Camp and soloist with the Furman Orchestra and Wind Ensemble. Other influential music teachers have included John Mack, Larry Combs, Donald Peck, Joseph Robinson, and Judith LeClair. A recipient of numerous rewards and recognitions, Allen also holds an honorary PhD in Education.

  Allen is Music Director and Conductor of Peachtree Symphonic Winds and Director of Orchestra at the First United Methodist Church of Marietta. His college music faculty teaching experiences have included North Georgia College and State University, Toccoa Falls College, and Georgia Perimeter College in woodwinds, music education, and music technology. Allen has also performed on stage with such notable entertainers as Ben Vereen, Bobby Vinton, and Diana Degarmo.

  A regular musician at the Aurora Theatre in Lawrenceville and Atlanta Lyric Theatre in Marietta, Allen is also the current musical production conductor at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Atlanta and St. Thomas More School in Decatur. He has adjudicated and conducted extensively in the southeast, as well as performed with many professional orchestras including Atlanta Pops, Charleston, Greenville, South Carolina Philharmonic, Charlotte, DeKalb, Columbus, Cobb, Rome, Asheville, Hendersonville, Brevard, Chicago Philharmonia, Atlanta Wind Symphony, and throughout Europe and Japan. Allen holds memberships in the Atlanta Federation of Musicians, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, Music Educators National Conference, and the Georgia Music Educators Association.
